Kiss me, I'm skinnier!
Okay, this would have been much better if I had posted it yesterday like I intended. Still, the sentiment is the same. Decent week, decent WI.
I am settling into MyFitnessPal, and really enjoying it. It has been incredibly refreshing to do something different. My efforts have been re-doubled, so seeing progress is also great validation.
It's funny how a seemingly small change - counting calories instead of points - has made me look at things differently, as well as learn new things. I've been puttering around the MFP community boards and soaking up tips and tricks from users there. One thing I have noticed mentioned over and over is net calories. Here I was just eating my 1200-1500 and doing my 300-500 calorie workouts. According to popular opinion on MFP, that's not exactly right, or at least not the best approach. So this week I'll be focusing on a net calorie intake of 1200, after my workouts. It doesn't mean exactly eating back what I've burned, but instead fueling for daily and extra activity. I'll be giving it a try the next week or so and we'll see how it goes. Best case: I'll lose weight. Worst case: it won't work so well and I'll go back to the old way.
Here's to a healthy week!

I'm not sure I understand the difference between the two types of calorie counting. Can you explain more? I might just be slow. :)
ReplyDeleteIt took me awhile to get it too. The idea is that you need a minimum of 1200 cals, and otherwise can have issues with muscle loss, plateaus, etc. so let's say you eat 1200, and also do a 200 cal workout. It means you've netted 1000 cals and you'll need an additional 200 to make up the difference. I didn't get it until someone explained it like this: if a gallon of gas (1200 cals) gets you exactly to work and back, you'll need more fuel if you run errands on the way home (a workout).
DeleteI am still wrapping my head around it, but I think it's worth a try!
So is the idea just that you need to eat more on workout days? I always try to net 1350, even on workout days - which means eating more on those days. Am I approaching it right then?
ReplyDeleteI always try to net 1350, even on workout days, meaning I end up eating more on those days. Does this mean I'm doing it right?
ReplyDeleteYes, that's the idea! I've done WW for so long (and the emphasis has been very much "less is more") that it is a really foreign and uncomfortable concept for me to eat 1500+ calories on workout days. It feels so wrong!!
